Take a Seat book signing on Wednesday 19th May, 6:30 to 8:30pm
Dominic Gill might not be a name familiar to you right now but watch this space as the twenty nine year old is cultivating a reputation as an adventurer who pursues challenges with a twist. Now, a unique book detailing his amazing two year journey down the length of the Americas on a tandem bicycle is just about to be released and Dom will be at Mountainfeet on the 19th of May to sign exclusive copies. It's a great opportunity to meet him just prior to his next adventure which sees him back in the States again for the summer and back on a bike again!
Also attending Dom's book signing evening and happy to chat are Andrew Burton from the world renowned off road footwear manufacturers Inov8 and local lad Andy Ashworth from sports nutrition experts Science in Sport (SIS).
The fascinating film of Dom's travels and remarkable adventures entitled Take a Seat was screened by ITV last summer and has since won several awards and been featured at some of the most prestigious outdoor film festivals such as Banff and Kendal. He's now juggling his adventures with speaking engagements designed not surprisingly with motivation in mind! One thing we at Mountainfeet have found through being friends with the lad for several years is that if Dom says, Dom does...
What perhaps needs explaining is that despite travelling essentially solo for 18,449 miles on Achilles the tandem, Dom gave a lift to around 270 random people along the way! Instead of lashing through the continent oblivious to life around him, he integrated with the inhabitants, learnt new languages and made friends for life...
One of his friends along the way was 74 year old Ernie who he met in California and rode with for a day. Dom found that Ernie was suffering from cancer but had one last ambition in an already remarkable life. To travel across the land he'd lived in all his days but never really seen. This wish has led to Dom's next challenge – cycling with Ernie across the USA on a specially made tandem and discovering the real grass roots America that tourists don't see... Dom departs for the Dom and Ernie Project in July and you can keep tabs on this human interest story with a twist on the Dom and Ernie Project website.
We aim to have Dom's film running in the background for those that aren't familiar with it and there'll be wine from excellent local merchants Winos of George Street, Oldham on hand to get the conversations started...
Inov8 running footwear preview
Go to any fell or adventure race in the UK and you'll see a hefty proportion of the competitors wearing Inov8 shoes from the super lightweight F-Lite 230 to the preferred footwear for our local runners, the Mudclaw 330. Inov8 have a very interesting philosophy with regard to the design of their products which is worth listening to as it might influence the way you choose your running shoes in the future. Andrew Burton works for Inov8 and will be on hand to answer questions and to fit footwear if helpful to you.
Science in Sport – energy for all our sports
Most of us know that correct nutrition and hydration is the key to prolonging the body's performance during sport and competition. One of the leaders in the field is Science in Sport who are constantly evolving their product and who supply to many top athletes worldwide. We're hoping that our old friend Andy Ashworth from SIS will be in attendance during the evening to answer questions from runners and cyclists alike. Andy has a pedigree in competitive running and until recently was the owner of Personal Best, the specialist running shoe shop in Chadderton. Many people will have benefitted from his vast knowledge over the years and he'd be happy to meet with old friends on the night.
